Bio

BIOGRAPHY: Mary Hornig

Mary brings a variety of skills and interests to her pursuit of creating and teaching art. Her specialty is glass fusing and casting in a kiln, but also does lamp working, furnace glass, metal, woodworking and photography.

A native Oregonian, Mary grew up surrounded by tools and books. She was a quiet and introspective child and now is an outgoing introvert and teacher. She started Oregon State University with a Science major and Art minor. A lot of things happened, resulting in B.S. and M.S. Civil Engineering degrees, living in Eugene for a third time, becoming a full time artist and establishing Oregon Odyssey Artworks in 1997.

Artistically drawn to both nature and abstracts, a recurring theme is native fish. This interest arises from early childhood fish experiences involving transitions between shallow sunlit water and deeper dangerous depths; love and betrayal. Abstracts dissolve the remaining barrier between emotion and expression and are intensely satisfying to the artist, especially as a vehicle for color. Resonating to the interplay of hidden and revealed, implied and obvious forms these are often realized as interior space and windows.

Mary is Past President of Oregon Glass Guild's Eugene Chapter and is President of the Guild's State Executive Board.
